Feeding, education and FUN in the Philippines!
On the streets of Manila, the capital of the Philippines, children as young as three years old live and work on the streets. Instead of carefree days in school, hundreds of hungry children roam with their brothers and sisters, begging for food and searching out anything they can sell to help them and their families survive. The danceaid team saw this first hand when we travelled to the other side of the world to learn more about life in the Philippines, and to find out how we can help them.
In August 2013 danceaid launched our first feeding program in Manila and it could not have started at a more vital time. Manila had been hit by lethal monsoon floods leaving families in Tondo and Navotas safe but without food. The mothers from the community are never put off by the rains though…
Thanks to your donations the children will not go without food today, but it is vital that this program continues and grows – particularly given the legacy of devastation left by Typhoon Haiyan, the relentless storms that batter the Philippines destroying homes and livelihoods, and the constant migration of poor, homeless families into Manila where our projects are located. Together we can stop the children being the victims.
Presently danceaid feeds 100 street children every day out of the kitchen pictured above. These children are enrolled in schools and collect their lunch on their way to school, or they come during their lunch breaks. Having a guaranteed meal everyday means the children do not have to scavenge all day to feed their hungry tummies, and they can avoid the dangerous street food known as ‘pagpag’.
Thanks to your donations danceaid has converted their hunger for food to a hunger to learn and lift themselves out of the poverty they endure daily. They overcome all sorts of challenges to attend school every day, and work hard to attain excellent results. This all amounts to happy, healthy youngsters with happy, healthy prospects thanks to YOU!
In 2014, we launched our Mama and Me feeding and support program for malnourished babies. Back then, we selected 50 infants who were significantly malnourished, underweight, unwell. Their mothers were so undernourished themselves that their bodies produced no milk to breastfeed their babies.
Now, thanks to donations you have made to danceaid charity, the children of Tondo are healthy, happy, growing, and singing just for you in the film clip below – SALAMAT (Thank you) from the Philippines!
Thanks to you, these children now have bright futures full of opportunity. And because their mothers’ health has also improved, they have the strength to provide for their little ones. Please help danceaid to feed and educate even more of Manila’s malnourished and homeless children today by donating and joining Team Danceaid today.
We are now raising money to extend the opportunity of an education to hundreds more of these children. In our street education program, street educators (often who have endured childhoods on the streets themselves) provide immediate care, support and vital information – a lifeline and a chance of a healthy, happy future to vulnerable young boys and girls. Through a series of street education sessions children learn about their rights, the dangers of drugs and other important health issues including HIV/AIDS awareness, and receive a basic education.
